It : It is difficult to diagnose the problem without seeing the teeth and evaluating what was previously done to them. It sounds like there might be an infection present. I would recommend seeing a dentist immediately to evaluate the situation. The sooner the better. Many times an area of infection could begin to destroy the bone supporting the teeth in question along with adjacent teeth and thereby compromising the whole area.

Sorry : Sorry to hear about your boyfriend's problem. However the only thing that he should do, and should have done long ago, is go and see a dentist.
