If : If your swelling is only in one ankle, and you're having pain, while i can't tell you for certain why, i can tell you what it isn't: it's not that you're retaining water. Your problem is localized to the ankle. You may have gout, pseudogout, or a synovitis, which is an inflammation of the tissue surrounding the ankle joint, which may be from an underlying arthritic process. You can also have a stress fracture, tendonitis, or even a phlebitis. Your best bet is to see your general medical doctor, who can examine you, order x-rays, and make the appropriate referral to a specialist, depending on what the problem seems to be.

Ankle swelling: You could start with your podiatrist to whom your family doc will refer you anyway. Good luck.
