In : In our office, the first visit is based on need depending on an initial visual exam. Our goal is a comprehensive exam, prophylaxis (cleaning) and a topical Fluoride treatment. Radiographs are recommended if appropriate. See our website www.Pediatricdentist.Com under first visit for more information.

For : For most patients this age, the initial visit to the pediatric dentist is an opportunity for you child to get acclimated to the exam process in a non-threatening environment and for the dentist to get to know the child. As a parent, you will be involved in this exam so that you can observe how the office operates and you will be given basic information on the care of your child's mouth. An exam will be performed, with the possible inclusion of xrays. Some offices will recommend a gentle cleaning, again to get your child use to having work done in their mouth.

I : I recommend that children be seen at 30 months for their first visit. Going for a ride in the chair, light cleaning and exam. Just get to know the routine early on before there is a problem.. I don't want that first visit to address a problem- i want it to be a good experience and the child should have no fear.

Exam and education: The first visit for a 2 year old should be relatively quick and easy. The dentist will do an exam. This exam may be while the child is on your lap, or it may be while they are in the chair--depending upon your child. They, or the staff, will also discuss general oral care for you child. In our office we usually start cleaning and Fluoride treatments at 3 years old, but this can vary.
