Spasm or TMJ: This can be caused by spasms of the muscles that control the closing of your jaw or a problem with the articular disc(s) your jaw joint(s) commonly referred to as the tmj. In the meantime you can take some otc medication such as advil, Motrin or aleve (naproxen) and some warm compresses to the outside of your face just in front of your ears. See a dentist as soon as possible for an evaluation.
