A member asked:

Is there any way to stop bruxism? i'm going to be getting a mouth guard to protect me teeth, but is there anyway to actually stop myself from doing this at night? in addition to being bad for my teeth, my jaw often hurts in the morning.

There : There are many triggers for a bruxism habit ranging from stress to improper bite. Some of these triggers can be "cured" others only controlled. Recommend a full work-up by a TMJ / facial pain specialist if the mouth guard does not show results in three months.

Sleep bruxism: Sleep bruxism is a sleep related movement disorder that we seem to be born with. It is not a habit as opposed to awake bruxism. Therefore, sleep bruxism can not be cured, it must be managed. The bite relationship has nothing to do with this sleep movement disorder. Some medications have been shown to reduce this activity.

Bruxism: Mouth guards protect you from sports injuries. An Occlusal Orthotic, commonly called a Night Guard, protect teeth from damage caused by clenching/grinding. There are lots of treatment modalities to decrease bruxism. our Dentist should be able to guide you.
