Dilaudid : Dilaudid (hydromorphone) is not a local anesthetic, and in most cases it lasts less than 24 hours. Injecting hydromorphone into the dorsal part of the hand could produce numbness of the back of the hand if it injured the dorsal ulnar cutaneous nerve or one of its branches.

An : An injectioninthe skin onthe dorsum of the hand can affect the way the hand feels. Elevationof the skin may leave it feeling different. Not truly numb or anesthetic or totally devoidof sensation but different due to the thickness of the tissues, the fluiid in the subcuticlar tissue and its effect on the light touch sensation. Once the fluid absorbs typically the sensation will return to normal unless there has been an injection directly into a small nerve branch.

See below: If it damaged the nerve then yes, possibly. Next question is to ask who is injecting you with IV medications into your thumb? Did they introduce an infection which is making the problem worse?
