It : It depends on the type and extent of the cancer. An additional consideration is your visual status in that eye and the unaffected eye. In general enucleation or removal of the eye is reserved for intraocular cancers that can not be reasonable treated with external beam or plaque radiation. The goal of surgery is to contain the cancer in the eye and ensure it does not spread elsewhere.

It : It depends on the type of cancer in your eye. For an aggressive malignant type, enucleation (removing of the eye) may save your life and may be the only option. This is a question that you should of had with your ophthalmologist that recommended enucleation.
