Too much sugar in your blood leads to blockage of tiny blood vessels that nourish the retina, cutting off its blood supply. As a result, the eye tries to grow new blood vessels to prevent retina death. But these new blood vessels don't develop properly and can leak easily. Laser therapy or Photocoagulation can attempt to stop the bleeding in these vessels, but it cannot repair the original damage.
