Is an endoscopy beneficial in an investigation of recurrent heartburn?

Yes: Endoscopy is recommended for heartburn which is not controlled with medications and for heartburn associated with nausea, vomiting, difficulty swallowing, weight loss, loss of appetite and black tarry stools. Gastroesophageal reflux disease can lead to a precancerous condition called barrett's esophagus so endoscopy should also be considered for screening if heartburn has been present for years.
