Sometimes : Sometimes the hormone levels can fluctuate, causing an abnormal appearing period. This can be caused by a variety of factors including stress on the body and weight changes (weight loss or gain). If it persists, or if you have pain, fever, discharge, or other changes, then check in again with your doctor, but if your periods go back to normal then it is likely of no concern. Also be sure your pap smear is up to date.
