Yes, : Yes, absolutely ask the question. I get asked this type of question all the time. The difficulty for us both is that physicians must stick to evidence based decisions in these circumstances to maintain credibility with employers, insurance companies and patients. As physicians, we are trained to be empathetic and caring and we want people to get better and feel well. We like to be liked too :) however, if someone wants us to provide a medically-certified time off then we have implications for many other people. Employers and insurance companies count on us for reliable medical advise and when we lose that trust with our other partners, then we also lose our advocacy role when it really counts. I cannot say exactly in your case but if your physician believes you are at risk of preterm labor as a result of activity then he/she should advocate for appropriate reduced work hours or activities or both. You should ask and work together as a team as dr fowler suggested. Best wishes.
