Does : Does it move up and down when you swallow? That could be a thyroglossal duct cyst (a remnant left behind when your thyroid developed when you were an embryo. There are other lumps in the neck that are normal anatomy. We are always concerned about cancer, and you are at higher risk due to your smoking. Other symptoms that make us worried are pain in the throat/mouth, hoarse voice, weight loss, ear pain, bleeding int he throat/mouth or coughing up blood. The fact that it has been there a year, makes those worries pretty low.

No clue: Do not know why you would develop bruising over your thyroid cartilage (it's really present in both men and women, just more prominent in men). If you haven't seen your health care provider for this already, you should. There may be some kind of thyroid problem, or even a problem with your blood coagulation, although do not know why bruising would consistently happen in that spot.
