A : A traumatic injury can cause a deep bruise, or hematoma, to the muscle or even a deep bruise to a bone. This would not necessarily be visible on the skin. This can be painful and persistent. This would usually resolve on its own. There could also be scar tissue caused by a significant injury that could be painful. Over time this should resolve and lessen in intensity if it is a hematoma or scar tissue.

Unsure: As long as your quadreaceps is intact you can probably wait a couple weeks before seeing an ortopedist, but if you have any difficulty straightening your knee against gravity, you need to be seen right away.I presume you can walk on it also, if not get seen quickly, it may be a bruise but hard to say without an apointment.
