Is implanon the same thing as norplant (levonorgestrel)?

Sort of: Implanon is the same idea. Norplant (levonorgestrel) was discontinued in the United States.

Different : Implanon/Nexplanon contains a different kind of Progesterone than Norplant. It is placed very superficially under the skin as opposed to the deep insertion of Norplant. It is only one implant instead of multiple rods. It has less side effects than Norplant as well. It can be used up to 3 years.
