Emphysema : Emphysema is most commonly associated with smoking. If you have never been a smoker, you are less likely to get it. However, there do seem to be factors that predispose people to better or worse lung function. Some of those may be inherited. If you are a smoker, i would recommend quitting immediately. Another thing you can do is start an aerobic exercise program. Start by walking. Increase your distance and speed as your condition improves. Biking and swimming are also great exercises for the heart and lungs. If you want a game, consider soccer, basketball, racquetball, tennis, etc. Where you have to keep moving. Osteoporosis is also hereditary and occurs in men as well as women. While there is some dispute about the effectiveness of calcium and vitamin d supplements, you need to get them somewhere in your diet. Dairy is best, but can be limited by lactose intolerance and calories. Weight-bearing exercise (e.g. Weight training) can help put stresses on the bones that stimulate making more bone. Women should talk to their physicians about the pros and cons of estrogen replacement. Other medications are available, based on your bone density, measure by DEXA scan. If you are doing the things above, you will build muscles naturally. If you want a nutrition boost, look for something high in proteins such as caseine (from milk) or ovalbumin (from eggs). Remember, if you are not working your muscles, the protein will just be turned to fat, so you have to eat in proportion to your energy usage.
