Can rapid weight loss cause a hormone change. recently had a period with the mirena iud in place. no previous periods. the rapid weight loss was related to gastric sleeve surgery 6 weeks ago. this is the second mirena iud and this would be the first time

To : To answer your question, any extreme or drastic change in weight ( increase or decrease )can affect your hormones thus altering your cycle. It is hard to say if you had your period due to the weight loss, the mirena, (levonorgestrel) or both. Regardless, your periods are back on track, which is a good thing. Take care.

Yes: After a surgery like the sleeve it not uncommon for your hormone balance to be thrown out of whack. So it is not uncommon for you to have breakthrough bleeding with your iud. As you get farther out from surgery your hormone levels will normalize.

The peripheral adipose tissue typically increases estrogen levels in men and women, so, with rapid loss of adipose tissue, men can experience rise in testosterone levels and women, changes in estrogen levels as well. The rate depends on the patient.
