Is there a difference in effectiveness between citalopram and escitalopram?

No: They are equally effective. Escitalopram may have fewer side effects, but the difference is small.

Depends: Chemically escitalopram has the s (active portion) of the drug whereas citalopram has a mixture of both active and inactive forms. Logically we don't expect a difference. However, a review of recent trials shows that escitalopram is more effective than citalopram in short-term effectiveness. See below: http://www.Ncbi.Nlm.Nih.Gov/pubmedhealth/pmh0047318/.

Celexa (citalopram): Escitalopram or Lexapro (escitalopram) is isomers of citalopram or celexa, with fewer side effects.
