Dizziness : Dizziness is a very ambiguous term. It can mean 'the room spinning' or 'lightheaded like i'm going to faint'. However, most problems causing dizziness from 'lightheadedness' aren't a problem when laying flat so this sounds more like 'the room spinning'. The medical term for this problem is 'vertigo'. The fact that the vertigo is worse with change in position (rolling on to his right side or sitting up) would make this a 'positional vertigo'. This sounds very much like a problem with the inner ear; specifically ... Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. This diagnosis can be confirmed with some simple bedside tests performed by your family medicine doctor, ENT physician, or neurologist. Often taking Benadryl (diphenhydramine) for several days can be helpful but just so you know the vertigo should begin to improve within a week. In addition, remember that there shouldn't be other accompanying problems otherwise this wouldn't be the correct diagnosis. Why do I know so much about this ... Because i experienced it personally when i was an intern (that was a rough couple of days!) good luck!
