I had asthma as a child and have had no problems in 5+ years. can asthma be dormant and now active?

Yes: Asthma is a process that develops mostly as a result of an allergic condition. The allergic trigger varies in different individuals, and mechanisms of allergy tolerance in the person also changes. If the asthma trigger has come back, or factors have decreased immune tolerance, including stress, asthma symptoms can come back.

Absolutely YES: Yes, this is not terribly uncommon. The common myth that asthma can be outgrown is unfortunately incorrect. The pathology and the predisposition to asthmatic reactions is not outgrown. Our bodies just get bigger and stronger and therefore do not get hit as hard by the same triggers. Your lung capacity alone is far greater as you grow. However, the wrong combination of triggers can hit hard!
