Not uncommon: When asthma is diagnosed after age 3 years, some of those with mild asthma may "outgrow" it usually around puberty. However those with moderate to severe asthma tend to have it for a long time. As for why does it come back, that's a question we are still searching for an answer. The answer may be from a viral respiratory tract infection rekindling the airway inflammation or hormonal changes.
