Research : Research has shown that a women's immune system is weakest between the period between ovulation and menstration. It is possible that if a 'bug' has been introduced into the body during this period, then a women can manifest symptoms during their period. Another possibility is the fact that women are more succeptible and sensitive to stress around their period and stress can lower the effectiveness of the immune system.

Unlikely: Most times it is simply the increase in hormones and the possible anemia or iron loss that makes you feel tired, sluggish or even ill. There are also conditions known as hormonal rhinitis which can make you feel like you have a cold but it is simply the menstrual cycle cause the rhinitis symptoms.
