Amylase : Amylase is a enzyme that is found in the body, it's main function is to aid in digestion. It is often ordered if a problem (mainly inflammation ) is suspected in the pancreas, if your son had abdominal pain, nausea, and/or vomiting then this test was likely ordered with many other tests including an abdominal ultrasound. I can not tell you what the 120 signifies, mainly due to the fact that each lab has it's own reference range for every test done. However i can say this falls in the normal range for the lab I use here in my office. The ordering doctor will be able to give you the exact reason why the test was ordered, the reference range of the amylase, and what your son's level means. Just based on your post and no other info. Given it sounds like your son is probably just fine, and no major problems were detected.

Normal: Agree with Dr. Jackson. All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, your son's amylase level is normal.
