No Surgery: Unlikely you will need surgery for a SINGLE episode of diverticulitis. However if you haver recurrent Diverticulitis episodes then it might become important to consider that option. I strongly recommend to discuss with your Gastroentrologist the cause of your Colon Narrowing (stenosis). were any Biopsies taken of that section?

Diverticulitis: usually gets managed with anitibiotics, as you have been. Ciprofloxacin and Flagyl are drugs of choice and patietns do get better with antibiotics and supportive care. When it doesn't get better than surgery is indicated. At 58 yo maybe its time for a follow up colonoscopy if you havent had one already.
