Constipation : Constipation is very common during pregnancy and usually can be improved with dietary changes such as increasing fiber and increasing fluid intake. Alternatively, fiber supplements such as docusate can be effective. Hernias are an unusual development during pregnancy but an umbilical hernia (belly button) is the most common. They frequently get smaller after delivery but will not go away completely without surgery. Listen to your doctor about any activity restrictions you may have during pregnancy whether or not you have a hernia.

Gastrointestinal : Gastrointestinal changes are common in pregnancy, such as nausea, constipation, hemorrhoids, etc. This almost always resolves soon after childbirth, of course. Hernias can occur in pregnancy, with an umbilical hernia being the most common type during this time period. Hernias are not usually caused specifically by straining or pregnancy. You could ask your physician if there are fiber supplements or other safe alternatives that you can use to assist with alleviating the constipation. Congratulations and best wishes during your pregnancy.
