Painful? Repair now: While many individuals have umbilical hernias that go unnoticed, once they are painful, the fear is that they are enlarging or some tissue is becoming trapped in the defect. At that point they should be repaired. It is difficult to determine timing of the surgery in a pregnant woman, but since they tend to enlarge then (and the surgery/recovery may be more painful,) it is better to repair it now.
