Chronic : Chronic acid reflux is a risk factor for esophageal cancer by predisposing the cells of the bottom of the esophagus to undergo a change to look more like stomach and intestinal tissue. However, this risk is extremely low and doesn't really become a factor until after more than 5-10 years of reflux. The cell change is called barrett's esophagus. Even if you do develop it, the risk of cancer is less than 1/2% a year. Although cancer should be in the back of your mind over the years, the more important issue is that uncontrolled reflux can cause quite a number of other problems and should be controlled. There are quite a number of alternatives available to treat and control reflux. You should consider contacting a gastroenterologist to discuss these choices.

Barrett's : Acid reflux untreated can lead to cell changes at the end of your esophagus. This can become a pre-cancerous condition called barrett's. This changed area has a much higher risk for esophageal cancer. To get to this point- acid reflux has to have become a chronic condition that is untreated for many years. See your physician to adjust your meds to improve your reflux.
