I : I would not recommend giving a child dimetapp for a long period. If this child has allergies, then loratidine (claritin) is a much better option for a 6 year old that will need it over a longer period for allergies. Dimetapp is medication that has several drugs in it including a decongestant and a cough suppressant as well as an antihistamine. The child does not need these other components and is not benefitting from them.

No, but...: If someone needs medicine like that for long periods of time, it is best to get at the root cause and find out what he is allergic to. Then you can eliminate or reduce the exposure to the problem instead of medicating the child. Get a referral to a good allergist from your pediatrician of family doc or even word of mouth and solve the problem.
