I : I have patients who claim that taking vitamin d supplements helps them with energy, but i also have others who do not notice any difference. We know that people with low vitamin d have a higher risk of developing ms. We do not know - yet - whether taking vitamin d alters the course of ms. This is a subject of ongoing research. Vitamin d is absorbed in the gut, and converted into its active form in the skin exposed to uv light from either sun or other sources. You can bypass this step by taking d3, which can be directly converted into the active form in the liver.

Evidence is strong: Vitamin d-3 does clearly affect the immune system, and numerous studies have shown that higher levels protect against relapses, MRI lesions and ultimate disability. In fact, higher levels of vitamin d can help prevent ms in studies of military personnel. The potency of d-3 is about 2-3 times that of d-2. Most ms pts do well on 5000-10000 units daily.
