In : In non-diabetic patients, we generally recommend cardiac bypass when there are obstructive cholesterol plaques present in the left main coronary artery, or if they involve all 3 major arteries. It sounds like your father has 2-3 arteries involved, and one of them very well may be the left main. The left main coronary provides blood to the majority of the heart, and can be fatal if the blockage is left untreated. We do sometimes place multiple stents in multiple arteries, but this is a case by case decision. Bypass in your father sounds appropriate, and may be the safest option for him depending on his specific disease but also the capabilities of the doctors who are caring for him. In good surgical centers, bypass is very very safe in the modern era. I wish your father and your family the best of luck.

No: There is no requirement for cardiac bypass surgery; if your father needs to be admitted, it must be more than high blood pressure. Ask your father to give permission to his doctor to speak to you directly, so that you can have a better idea why the dr wants your father admitted.
