Group : Group b strep (gbs) is not harmful to women in most cases. We treat gbs positive women in labor with antibiotics to prevent transmission to the newborn during the birthing process(peripartum period). As the infant's immune system is not fully functional, the infant can get gbs meningitis or septicemia, which can be catastrophic. Although the incidence of this was rare, the terrible outcomes associated with it led to a change in how we manage gbs prior to delivery. While there is debate about treating gbs during pregnancy, there is very strong evidence that treating gbs during the peripartum(labor) process is effective and safe for vaginal deliveries. I don't know of any holistic treatments that are effective for gbs, or have been proven so.

Ignore it: Group b strep is a periodic visitor to the digestive tract and at any given time 30% of women may have it show up on a vaginal swab. Except for it's well known nasty habit of hurting newborns & occasionally causing urinary tract infections it can be just a benign hitchhiker in your system. Unless you have urinary symptoms or are in the final weeks of pregnancy, i would ignore the germ.
