Needle : Needle biopsy of a lymph node may reveal a tumor that has spread from an internal organ, a malignant lymphoma arising in a lymph node or a non-cancerous process resulting from an infection or a reaction to a mild virus. If there is tumor, it may be necessary for a surgical biopsy in order to provide more tissue for classification, as in malignant lymphoma. A lymph node needle biopsy with a tumor appearing to have arisen elsewhere will often require additional surgical biopsy of the originating tumor site after additional studies, usually x-ray and other imaging studies, reveal the site. A needle biopsy of an enlarged liver may reveal a tumor that has arisen in the liver itself, a tumor that has spread to the liver from another organ, or a non-malignant disease of the liver such as hepatitis or scarring due to injury, most commonly caused by excessive alcoholic beverage consumption.
