Fibromyalgia : Fibromyalgia is a complex, chronic condition that is poorly understood and requires long-term management. As a teenager, your sister should make sure that this is the correct diagnosis- even though it is poorly understood there are specific diagnostic features that characterize fibromyalgia. Medicines may be useful, but should be used with care, especially in adolescents. Narcotic pain medications are commonly used, but can be a trap to fall in to and should probably be avoided. They have many side effects that could be detrimental. Behavioral adaptations are extremely important. Being physically active is huge and is probably the best thing she can do to take active charge of her own health. Depression is common in patients with fibromyalgia, and any treatment plan that does not address this component of a person is incomplete. Most importantly, she needs to be seeing a physician who understands her situation and can take the time to address all these aspects of her care.

Self-care: Fibromyalgia is aggravated by stressors. The best way to deal with the pain is through plenty of rest, self care, proper nutrition and wellness activities. Meditative exercises help build ones body awareness and have been known to help with chronic pain and stress. Also, psychotherapy can help teach good coping skills and self-care. May try hypnotherapy, acupuncture, and chiropractic care.
