Do not use Visine: There are multiple causes of red eyes: dry eye syndrome, blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids) and allergic conditions are most common. The best thing is to get evaluation by an ophthalmologist to identify the cause properly. Until you are seen, use over the counter artificial tears (refresh, optive, etc.) every 2-3 hours in each eye and start omega3 supplement (fish oil) 1 gram a day.

Determine the cause: The key is to determine why your eyes are red. Dry eye is a common cause of this and can often be treated with over the counter artificial tears. Go to an ophthalmologist and have him examine and determine the cause. From there treatment can be made. Refrain from using any "get the red out" drops such as visine. These drops tend to worsen redness and cause it to be chronic.
