A member asked:

Is it possible to form a tolerance or resistance to nitrous oxide (laughing gas)?

No: Nitrous oxide goes away quickly once you stop breathing it. With narcotics or alcohol, the more you use them, the more you need to achieve the same effect. Nitrous oxide does not work in the same way as medications that are taken orally, IV or im. So you do not become tolerant to n20 in the same way. It should be used only as a part of anesthesia and not for pain relief or recreation.

Unlikely: Nitrous oxide is usually mixed with oxygen to a level which is comfortable for the patient. I have never observed a patient needing a higher concentration as they age however some patients do develop headaches more frequently as they get older following administration.
