Nitrous Oxide: See: http://www.clinicalanaesthesiology.com/article/S1521-6896(01)90166-1/abstract?cc=y and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitrous_oxide Few patients actually laugh, but it does relax you and therefore diminish your inhibitions. The actual mechanism of how it works is not fully known.

Relaxation: nitrous has similar effects of alcohol on your nervous system. feelings of happiness and relaxation tend to make you laugh.
