Nitrous Oxide safer!: Nitrous oxide is very safe and should be first tried. Local anesthesia can be added once the nitrous oxide is in use for very effective pain control.

IV sedation: Usually, nitrous oxide or laughing gas is not adequate sedation for extraction of teeth. Most people require IV sedation when it comes to removal of teeth, but it is a individual preference. Some patients do fine with local anesthetic. It really depends on the complexity of the surgery and the individual patient.

Local plus nitrous: All most patients really need is local anesthesia. If you want to be more relaxed, nitrous oxide\oxygen or sweet air is a nice supplement. IV sedation would be the next step up if you really felt that you needed something more.

Either: Both are possible treatments for sedation. Be sure that the dentist and dental team are properly trained. If you can do the procedure with nitrous oxide, i'd recommend that but if that is not enough and you need more sedation, then conscious sedation may be needed. Both are options with nitrous being safer but both are safe with properly trained individuals.

Better: What is better for someone else might not be the best answer for you. Please consult with your treating Dentist or specialist Oral Surgeon to determine, based on your medical history and the anticipated procedure, what would be the best answer for you.
