Can be: Periodontitis is an infection of the gums and bone around the teeth. If the bone develops an abcess, very often it can radiate around the jaw and up to the joint. If you are missing teeth, that often can have more to do with jaw joint pain.

Depends: Depends. Usually would be jaw pain directly around your teeth. Could be other dental causes, problem with jaw joint, or other problems. See DDS for exam/diagnosis/treatment.
