Differences: Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gum only and has not progressed into gum, bone, and other attachment loss. It doesn't always progress into periodontitis. Periodontitis means the inflammation has progressed into the underlying structures and leads to bone, gum, and tooth loss. Early prevention is the key. Having a comprehensive exam can determine how simple or involved treatment will be.

Dental exam: Gingivitis means your gums are inflammed but if it progresses deeper and the bacteria gets into the jawbone, you have periodontitis, you may notice a fetid odor or loosening teeth; but the only sure diagnosis is from a periodontal exam and x-rays with your dentist.
