How is chronic periodontitis treated?

Treat and manage: Much can be done to arrest periodontal disease and then manage it. Excellent non-surgical treatments are available today to arrest and sometimes reverse the soft and hard tissue damage with the use of soft tissue lasers. Once the active disease is arrested, management is critical to keep the disease from reactivating, typically periodontal maintenance cleanings every 3-6 months.

Several methods: Chronic periodontitis is treated using one or a combination of treatments. Scaling and root planing (deep cleanings), lasers, perio protect, surgery and careful, daily brushing and flossing as well as other home care modalities all can be involved. There is no cure for this disease as yet, only methods to control it by reducing the number of bacteria responsible for the disease under the gum.

Chronic TLC: While there are many different treatments for periodontal disease, they all involve regular dental visits. Treatment could include deep cleanings, a change in oral hygiene, surgery, antibiotics and other care. Your dentist or periodontist will direct you as to which options are best for your oral health.
