Will a cortisone shot help me play football with torn knee cartilage?

Yes: Cortisone and other steroids suppress the normal inflammation associated with an injury, including pain and swelling, so you can play on an injured knee with less discomfort and stiffness. It also suppresses both your ability to heal an injury/infection and to determine if you have a significant injury/infection, so these types of drugs should be used cautiously and only under a physician's care.

Not a good idea: The cortisone shot will decrease some of the swelling but will mask some of the damage you may be causing while playing. Not recommended.
