Jibberish: Patients who have spasticity can be described in many ways. Hemiplegia means that half of the body is involved. Diplegia means two limbs - usually the legs - are involved. Quadriplegia means that all four limbs are involved. Some doctors use the term of bilateral hemiplegia for patients with both sides of the body involved but one side more than other - bilateral quadriplegia does not exist.

Appropriate care: Most patients with quadriplegia were either born with brain injury or acquired it due to injury or infection. Once the injury occurs, there is little more to do other than provide appropriate therapy and care. Most patients have trouble with bowel and bladder control, and some have breathing problems and need special respiratory support. Most important is to avoid complications.

See below: Quadriplegia which means weakness or paralysis in all 4 limbs is a descriptive term only. It does not explain what caused the quadriplegia. Conditions that affect the brain and spinal cord can cause quadriplegia and this can happen from trauma, infections, autoummune conditions like multiple sclerosis and many others. The diagnosis is first made with the history and physical examination.
