See below: If the disc is what is causing your pain as determined by your doctor, it would be ok to go back to work but i would make sure that you do not sit in one place for more than an hour without getting up and moving around. Sitting too long in one position can have negative effects on the discs.

It should be ok but : Sitting for prolonged periods may make you feel worse so get up a lot. Sitting is 4x your body weight across your lower back discs. Make sure you exercise, keep your weight trim and avoid smoking. 90% of disc herniations get better without surgery. A rolled towel in the small of your back may help sitting tolerance if your chair does not have a good lumbar support.
