What is "pumping and dumping?"

Discarding breastmil: Pumping and dumping refers to pumping breast milk and then throwing it away rather than feeding it to your baby. This practice is most frequently used when a breast feeding mother consumes alcohol and then, instead of giving that milk to her baby (since alcohol passes into breast milk), she throws it out and feeds her baby something else (preferably stored breast milk).

Discarding milk: This phrase means a woman will pump her breastmilk and then immediately discard it. This is typically done if a woman is worried about something passing through her milk to her baby. For example, many women will "pump and dump" if they have had more than 1 alcoholic drink.
