Probably normal: Since your child is 5 months old, crossing the eyes with near gazing is generally normal. I still recommend that an exam of the child's eyes be performed to reassure they are developing normally. This should be done by a pediatric ophthalmologist.

Not normal: Crossing eyes after 3 months of age is not normal. Your baby likely has some uncorrected far-sightedness which is causing the eyes to cross on near focusing. Glasses correcting the far-sightedness should fix the problem and your baby will grow out of the glasses and eye crossing with time. If some cases, the eyes can continue to cross and may need additional treatment. See an eye doctor.
