Jump to conclusions?: Medical professionals try to listen to what patients are saying about themselves, in order to offer assistance as needed. If you indicate you want to die or do not care about living, they may well inquire about suicidal ideas or plans. They do not want to miss someone who might need and want help with such feelings -- and would err on the side of caution if they don't know you well.
