Safe if monitored: Accutane (isotretinoin) is effective for cystic acne. As with many drugs, there are associated side effects that need close monitoring. For this reason, Accutane should only be taken under a physician's care. We are mostly concerned about fetal abnormality if pregnant while on accutane. Other side effects include but not limited to depression, liver and lipid abnormalities, etc...
