They Drive the Heart: Your heart is a muscular pump with four valves that will not do anything without the electrical impulses that drives it. Sodium (na+) potassium (k+) and calcium (ca 2+) are the primary electrolytes that are critical for a normal heart rhythm. The heart will beat abnormally (arrhythmias) if the electrolytes are not in their normal ranges. The kidneys do a pretty good job keeping a balance.
