See below: An orthopedic surgeon has gone to medical shool and then done a residency in orthopedic surgery. A podiatrist has gone to podiatry school to study the lower extremity and then done a residency specific to the foot and ankle.

See below: The short version is that podiatric surgeons attend podiatric medical school followed by a three year podiatric surgery residency. Orthopedic surgeons attend medical school (allopathic or osteopathic) followed by an orthopedic residency. They may go on to complete a foot and ankle fellowship.
