See below: Buckle removal is done typically if the buckle is extruding through the conjunctiva (and is thus an infection risk) or if it causes recalcitrant double vision due to eye muscle interference. To do this one cuts down the conjunctiva (skin over the white sclera of the eye) to access the buckle which is then cut and removed. Risks: bleeding, infection, scleral perforation. Usually safe.
