A member asked:

Can a scleral buckle ever be put back on again once removed? percentage of retina detachment after removal. how does a scleral buckle removal procedure work? what are the risks?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Scleral buckles are removed for infections or erosions into the sclera. After removal, a pars plana vitrectomy can be performed with gas or oil infusion to tamponade the retina in place and prevent re-detachment. A scleral buckle works by supporting the tear and detachment on the indented part of the eye wall. This tends to elongate the eye and cause a myopic shift in refractive error.
